THCA Flower vs THC-P Flower: Which Is Better and Stronger?

We’ve been seeing a lot of hemp companies embracing “enhanced flower” products lately, which take industrial hemp flower buds and enhance them with psychoactive cannabinoids, to offer a federally legal yet totally intoxicating flower product for consumers to enjoy similarly to weed. 

Of all of the different kinds of flower products you can find, two of the most popular are THCA flower and THC-P flower, which we will be comparing today.  While they may seem like they basically feel the same, you’d be surprised by just how different they actually are.

Contender #1: THCA Flower

First up, we have THCA flower, which is extremely sought-after right now.  THCA flower is raw hemp flower that is cultivated to yield high levels of THCA, which’s different from THC-P flower – infused with THC-P distillate.  

THCA is the raw form of delta 9 THC, which becomes delta 9 THC once it’s heated to the right temperature.  That explains its popularity, as THCA is also the cannabinoid that dominates raw marijuana, as it only turns into delta 9 THC after it’s been heated, like through smoking, vaping, baking, etc.

THCA flower is the closest thing to legal weed that you can buy right now.  In fact, it’s chemically identical to marijuana flower, while being federally legal.  THCA flower is less intoxicating than THC-P flower, which we’ll get into a bit more in the next section, so that is something to keep in mind.  It does match the potency of weed, as it yields the same THCA levels as marijuana.

THCA flower is arguably the more popular option of the two types of flower that we’re covering today, again because it’s closer to marijuana.  People also appreciate the fact that it’s more “natural,” in that it’s not infused with anything.  One thing to keep in mind is that state laws for THCA hemp flower are different from those of THC-P flower, so you’ll want to pay attention to what your local laws have to say about THCA flower.  In other words, just because THC-P flower is legal in your state, for example, that doesn’t mean that the same applies to THCA flower.

• Produces a high that many people compare to that of weed, because THCA converts into delta 9 THC.
• More “natural”, because THCA flower is not infused with distillate, but bred and cultivated to naturally produce higher levels of THCA than average.
• It’s federally legal, unlike weed.
• It’s more popular than THC-P flower, so you’ll likely find a broader selection of strains, sizes, etc.

Cons:

• It’s not legal in all 50 states, due to state laws that have prohibited sales of high-THCA products.
• It’s less potent than THC-P flower, which may be a good thing, but for others, doesn’t reflect their high THC tolerance.

Contender #2: THC-P Flower

Then, we have THC-P flower, which is raw hemp flower infused with THC-P distillate, instead of being cultivated to produce high THC-P levels (as that’s not possible in the natural world).  Really, when comparing the two, the only differences that are noticeable are the effects of their respective cannabinoids, THCA and THC-P.

And, that brings us to discussing THC-P, which is a relatively new discovery on the hemp market (it was only isolated in 2019).  THC-P is tetrahydrocannabiphorol, a cannabinoid that exists naturally in the cannabis plant.  It’s also the most potent cannabinoid that occurs in nature, as it attaches to cannabinoid receptors 32x as effectively as delta 9.  In practical terms, the high you can get from THC-P is 10x times as intoxicating as delta 9, and that’s a pretty big deal.

It goes without saying that THC-P is an extremely intoxicating cannabinoid, and because of that, it’s not something we recommend for cannabis newbies.  While the high is not dangerous, it is so strong that it can make people who are relatively new to cannabis feel overwhelmed by the intoxicating qualities, and so it’s best saved for experienced users only.  THCA flower is, naturally, a more “entry-level” choice.

We also want to mention that THC-P isn’t just all about those recreational effects.  The same properties you can get from delta 9 THC that make cannabis such a standout medicinal product, you likely can derive from THC-P, but even more strongly.  So, there’s reason to believe that THC-P flower has genuine medicinal value as well.

• Offers a high that is stronger than any other cannabinoid, for high-tolerance, experienced users who want the most bang for their buck.
• Aside from the recreational effects, THC-P flower may be more “medicinal” than delta 8 flower because of how strong the cannabinoid is.
• Because of the high potency, a little can go a long way with THC-P flower, meaning you can make your purchase last longer.

Cons:

• Not legal in all 50 states, due to state laws that have prohibited sales of intoxicating hemp products.
• Stronger than THCA flower, so low-tolerance individuals or beginners may find its effects too much.
