THC-P Flower vs Delta 9 Flower: Which Is Better and Stronger?

Maybe you’ve noticed the growing trend toward psychoactive flower products that’s been taking over the hemp market in the last few years.  Hemp companies have found all kinds of creative ways to take the industrial flower buds of the hemp plant and enhance them with our favorite cannabinoids for getting high, all while keeping them totally legal according to federal law.

Now, with so many intoxicating cannabinoids available on the market, it can be hard to keep up.  That’s why we’re here: to compare two of the most popular cannabinoids you’ll find in flower today: THC-P and delta 9 THC

Contender #1: THC-P Flower

The first type of flower we’ll discuss is THC-P flower, which is flower buds from the hemp plant that are infused with THC-P distillate – a purified extract of tetrahydrocannabiphorol distillate.  Distillate is a purified extract of a cannabinoid that is produced by applying steam to the plant at varying levels of temperature and pressure, to discard all of the compounds other than THC-P.

The difference between delta 9 flower and THC-P flower has everything to do with the cannabinoids themselves.  And, THC-P is a relatively new discovery on the hemp market (it was only isolated in 2019).   THC-P is tetrahydrocannabiphorol, a cannabinoid that exists naturally in the cannabis plant.  It’s also the most potent cannabinoid that occurs in nature, as it attaches to cannabinoid receptors 32x as effectively as delta 9 THC.  With that being said, you can get 10x ‘more high’ off of THC-P than you can off of delta 9, so keep that in mind.

Given that THC-P is an extremely intoxicating cannabinoid, it’s not something we recommend for cannabis newbies.  While the high is not harmful to your health, it is so strong that it can make beginners feel uneasy if they’re not used to being high, and so it’s best saved for experienced users only.  THCA flower is, naturally, a more “entry-level” choice.

We also want to mention that THC-P is more than a recreational cannabinoid for those who want to get utterly stoned.  The same properties you can get from delta 9 THC that make cannabis such a standout medicinal product, you likely can derive from THC-P, but even more strongly.  So, there’s reason to believe that THC-P flower has genuine medicinal value as well.

Key Pros & Cons:

Pros:

  • Offers a high that is stronger than any other cannabinoid, for high-tolerance, experienced users who want the most bang for their buck.
  • Aside from the recreational effects, THC-P flower may be more “medicinal” than delta 9 flower because of how strong the cannabinoid is.
  • Because of the high potency, a little can go a long way with THC-P flower, meaning you can make your purchase last longer.

Cons:

  • Not legal in all 50 states, due to state laws that have prohibited sales of intoxicating hemp products.
  • Stronger than delta 9 THC flower, so low-tolerance individuals or beginners may find its effects too much.

Contender #2: Delta 9 Flower

Then, there’s delta 9 THC flower, which is another term for THCA flower.  THCA flower is raw hemp flower that isn’t infused with a distillate, like THC-P flower, but instead, it’s bred cultivated in a way that results in a high level of THCA, naturally.

The reason why THCA flower and delta 9 flower are the same product is because THCA is the raw form of delta 9 THC, which becomes delta 9 THC once it’s heated to the right temperature.  Basically, THCA is also the cannabinoid that’s abundant in raw marijuana, as it only turns into delta 9 THC after it’s been heated, like through smoking, vaping, baking, etc.  So, even when you’re handling weed, you’re not actually handling delta 9, but THCA.

Delta 9 flower (when it’s derived from hemp) is the closest thing that you can get to legal marijuana, as the chemical compositions are identical.  At the same time, hemp-derived delta 9 flower is legal, as when tested, it shows a high level of THCA rather than delta 9, as the latter is restricted.  As you can see, delta 9 flower is less potent than THC-P flower, and yet that doesn’t mean that it’s weak by any means.

Now, we want to mention that state laws for delta 9 flower (aka THCA flower) are different from those of THC-P flower.  Some states restrict THC-P flower, and others restrict THCA flower, so you’ll want to pay attention to your state laws to make sure that you’re buying a product that is, in fact, legal where you live.  And, naturally, the choice between the two types of flower that we’re covering today can come down to which one is legal in your state.

Key Pros & Cons:

Pros:

  • Offers a high that lots of people compare to that of weed, since the chemical composition is the same.
  • It’s more “natural,” because delta 9 flower is not infused with distillate, but instead is bred and cultivated to naturally produce higher levels of THCA than average.
  • It’s a federally legal type of flower.
  • It’s more popular than THC-P flower, so you’ll likely find a broader selection of strains, sizes, etc.

Cons:

  • Like THC-P flower, delta 9 flower is not legal in all 50 states, due to state laws that prohibit products which yield high levels of THCA.
  • It’s milder than THC-P, so high-tolerance users may prefer THC-P flower.
