What is HHC?

Before we get into HHC flower, let’s go over the basics of hexahydrocannabinol.  HHC is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in hemp’s seeds and pollen.  It also just so happens to be the hydrogenated form of delta 9 THC – in other words, it’s THC, with an extra hydrogen atom.  Basically, what this means is that the effects of HHC are virtually the same as those of delta 9 THC, although some say it’s just slightly milder in terms of its high.

HHC Flower 101: What You Need to Know!

HHC flower just refers to raw hemp flower, aka “CBD flower”, that has been infused with hexahydrocannabinol distillate, which is an extract of pure HHC, extracted from the hemp plant.  The result. a product that can offer all of the benefits of CBD flower, with the addition of HHC, to get you high.  And, that makes it a product that’s a whole lot like marijuana.

Making HHC flower is actually a pretty straightforward process. 

It starts with industrial hemp – preferably organic hemp.  The buds of the mature hemp plant are picked and dry-cured, which is a standard practice in the industry, to prevent mold and mildew from growing on the flower while in storage.  From there, the flower buds are infused with HHC distillate, which is an isolate extract of HHC produced by applying steam to the plant at various levels of heat and pressure.  This process removes all of the other compounds in the plant, leaving behind an extraction of pure HHC.

So, just how much HHC is actually in HHC flower? Actually, in most cases, that depends on the strain that you buy.  Companies that produce HHC flower will usually attempt to replicate marijuana as much as possible, and so they’ll add the amount of HHC distillate needed to match the naturally occurring THC levels in the cannabis form of the same strain.  

Take Green Goblin, a cannabis strain that naturally yields upwards of 24% THC.  HHC flower companies will harvest Green Goblin hemp flower, then infuse the buds with a minimum of 24% HHC for a match.

How is HHC Flower Different from Marijuana?

In terms of chemical composition, HHC flower and marijuana flower are very similar, as are hemp and marijuana.  Of course, one big difference is legality, as marijuana is federally illegal, and hemp flower is legal, because hemp naturally yields far lower, nonintoxicating levels of delta 9 THC.  

HHC flower is therefore federally compliant, since its THC levels are low, but at the same time, it has high levels of HHC to be similar in terms of the high it can provide.  At the same time, he terpene profiles of the two plants are identical.  One thing that does make it different is that HHC flower, coming from hemp flower, is going to contain a much higher concentration of CBD, as hemp yields high levels of CBD and marijuana does not.

What Makes HHC Flower Federally Legal?

So how can HHC actually be federally legal if it’s so similar to marijuana?  You can thank the 2018 Farm Bill for that, which determined how all hemp products are legal, assuming they’re tested to verify that they contain no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC by dry weight.  Notice that nowhere in the bill is HHC mentioned, because HHC and delta 9 are two different cannabinoids.  Meaning, there’s no limit then, on how much HHC may be infused into flower, or any product, for that matter.

Unfortunately, HHC is not actually legal everywhere in the United States, due to a number of states banning sales of psychoactive hemp derivatives, in response to their growing popularity.  Because of that, if you live in one of these states below, you can’t actually buy HHC flower for the time-being:

How to Use HHC Flower

• Making Edibles: Finally, you can use flower to make edibles.  This requires that you first “decarb” (bake) the flower at a low temp, to activate the cannabinoid’s psychoactive effects.  Then, you infuse the buds in some sort of fat – usually butter – and use your new HHC-infused butter in place of regular butter in your favorite recipe.
