Delta 8 Flower vs Delta 9 Flower: Which Is Better and Stronger?

Did you know that lots of companies in this industry are exploring hemp flower in new and exciting ways, in order to make it possible for consumers to get blissfully high off of freshly cured buds, while enjoying a product that’s totally compliant with federal law?  Perhaps you’ve been hearing about all of these relatively new cannabinoids that’re making their way into loose buds and pre-rolls?

We know, we know, it can be hard to keep track of all of them.  That’s why we’re gonna simply compare two of them in particular: delta 8 flower and delta 9 flower, both of which, surprisingly, exist on the hemp marketplace, so you can buy them online without breaking any kind of federal restrictions.

Contender #1: Delta 8 Flower

Delta 8 flower, aka delta 8 THC flower, refers to the flower buds of the hemp plant that have been infused with delta 8 THC distillate.  First, companies harvest the buds of the industrial hemp plant, which naturally have a high concentration of cannabidiol, and then they’re submerged in a purified extract of delta 8  known as distillate.  To make delta 8 distillate, the process is actually quite involved, applying distilled steam to the plant material at varying temperatures and pressure levels to discard everything but pure delta 8 THC.

Delta 8 flower is extremely popular right now, mainly due to it being federally compliant flower that can get you ‘high’.  And, delta 8 THC isn’t the only psychoactive cannabinoid that you can find in hemp flower, although it is one of the most popular.  Delta 8 THC is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis, which exists in about 0.1% of the plant’s entire chemical makeup.  It’s a cannabinoid that naturally results from oxidized delta 9 in aging plant material, and some of that delta 9 converts into delta 8 by developing entirely new chemical characteristics.

Delta 8’s effects are quite unique from those of delta 9 THC, which is why the cannabinoid is so popular.  First of all, it’s 30% milder than delta 9 THC, and this means a notably milder high than what you would get from weed.  People often say that the high of delta 8 is clear-minded, meaning that it doesn’t interfere with their ability to remain aware and alert.  However, the ‘high’ can be immensely gratifying because of how uniquely soothing it is.  People love taking delta 8 when they’re looking for a quick and easy way to decompress, as it can put both the mind and body at ease in ways that you don’t find with other cannabinoids.

Delta 8 flower is sold in all of the same strains you will find on the cannabis marketplace, and the amount of delta 8 THC that’s added to the flower is left to the discretion of the manufacturer, although most companies infuse it with enough delta 8 THC to match the THC level that occurs in a specific strain.

Key Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Offers an awesomely tranquil high that can bring you into a state of peace.
  • Milder than marijuana, but still psychoactive.
  • Federally legal, unlike weed.
  • An Entry-Level form of THC.

Cons:

  • Not legal in all 50 states, due to state laws that have prohibited sales of intoxicating hemp products.
  • While delta 8 THC is a milder, more beginner-friendly form of THC, it can still be overwhelming to beginners if they consume too much of it, so starting with a low dose is ideal.
  • Small chance of encountering fake delta 8 THC flower, as delta 8 distillate is colorless, flavorless, and odorless, therefore making fakes easier to produce.

Contender #2: Delta 9 THC Flower

The other option we’re covering is delta 9 THC flower, which is just another way to describe THCA flower.  THCA flower, for those who don’t know is raw hemp flower that is bred cultivated in a way that results in a high level of THCA, naturally.  This means that while delta 8 flower contains a distillate, delta 9/THCA flower does not.

The reason why THCA flower and delta 9 flower are the same product is because THCA is the raw form of delta 9 THC, which becomes delta 9 THC once it’s exposed to heat through a process known as decarboxylation, which occurs when we smoke, vape, or cook/bake with flower.  See, THCA is also the cannabinoid that’s abundant in raw marijuana, as it only turns into delta 9 THC after it’s been decarbed.  So, even when you’re handling weed, you’re not actually handling delta 9, but THCA.

Delta 9 flower (when it’s derived from hemp) is the closest thing that you can get to legal marijuana, as the chemical compositions are the same on paper.  But, hemp-derived delta 9 flower is legal under federal law, unlike marijuana, because tests will show a high level of THCA rather than delta 9, as the latter is restricted while THCA is not.  As you can see, delta 9 flower is stronger than delta 8 flower by 30% or so, as delta 8 is a milder alternative to delta 9.

Please keep in mind that state laws for delta 9 flower (aka THCA flower) are different from those of delta 8 flower.  Some states prohibit sales of delta 8 flower, while others prohibit sales of delta 9/THCA flower, so you’ll want to pay attention to your state laws to make sure that you’re buying a product that is, in fact, legal where you live.  And, naturally, the choice between the two types of flower that we’re covering today can come down to which one is legal in your state.

Key Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Offers a high that many people compare to that of weed, since the chemical composition is the same.
  • It’s more “natural,” because delta 9 flower is not infused with distillate but bred and cultivated to naturally produce higher levels of THCA than average.
  • It’s a federally legal type of flower.
  • It’s more popular than delta 8 flower, so you’ll likely find a broader selection of strains, sizes, etc.
  • Stronger than delta 8 flower in terms of the potency of its ‘high’.

Cons:

  • Like delta 8 flower, delta 9 flower is not legal in all 50 states, due to state laws that prohibit products which yield high levels of THCA.
  • It’s stronger than delta 8 flower, so you’ll find that the high is quite strong if you’re a total beginner.
